Canadian driver James Hinchcliffe has signed with Sam Schmidt Motorsports for the 2009 Indy Lights series. Sam Schmidt Motorsports has held numerous Indy Lights tests this off-season, testing many of last year's racing champions from around the globe. It was announced earlier today that James Hinchcliffe has signed with the team to compete alongside Gustavo Yacaman and Ana Beatriz.
This is a real solid signing for Sam Schmidt Motorsports, who looks to further their reputation as the winningest team in Firestone Indy Lights history.
Hinchcliffe is known for his out-going personality off the track and his tenacity behind-the-wheel. The 22-year-old driver has competed in numerous open wheel series since graduating from the karting ranks. He has driven in Canada's Bridgestone F2000 series, Formula BMW, Star Mazda, Atlantic Championship, A1GP (for team Canada), and now the Indy Lights series. Heading into the Indy Lights world, he has claimed a top-five finish in the overall championships in four out of the five series listed above, with A1 being the only exception. One would expect another top-five this year based on his past success and experience. I've been watching Hinchcliffe since his karting days and I fully expect him to be a championship contender in 2009, especially with his association with Sam Schmidt Motorsports.
