Greg Mansell, as many expected, has decided to return to Europe and run in the World Series by Renault for 2009. It was announced early today that he has signed with Ultimate/Signature Racing for his 2009 World Series campaign.
Greg spent last season in North America running the Atlantic Championship alongside his older brother Leo. Their father, Nigel Mansell, was the 1992 Formula One Champion and the 1993 IndyCar Champion.
Greg had a fairly mediocre season in the Atlantic Championship, but he was really starting to improve as the season came to an end. Personally, I would have liked to see him stick around for another year and develop. His average finish in his first five Atlantic races was 14.80, his average finish in the final five races was 8.60... just to give you an idea of how much he was improving.
One more season in the Atlantic Championship would have proved extremely beneficial to the 21-year-old pilot. Especially when you look at the new prize fund being offered in 2009. Although, I'm sure it's safe to say that the Mansell brothers won't have too many problems finding the necessary funding to run wherever they please in their future endeavors.
